A BIOS update can fix bugs, add support for newer processors and get your PC ready for Windows 11. It sounds scary, and it is the one PC job where you really should follow the steps exactly. Done carefully, it takes about fifteen minutes.

I am using an MSI board and its built-in M-Flash tool, but every brand works the same way: download the right file, put it on a USB stick and flash it from the BIOS. I explain each step, including the parts that usually confuse people.

Should you update at all?

If your PC works well, you do not have to update the BIOS. Update when there is a clear reason:

  • You are installing a newer processor that your board only supports with a newer BIOS.
  • The release notes fix a problem you actually have, such as memory instability or a missing setting.
  • You need a feature, such as TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot support for Windows 11.
  • The manufacturer lists it as a security update.

If you are installing a new processor, update the BIOS first, while the old processor is still in the board. Some boards will not start with a new processor until the BIOS knows it.

Tip: Plug the PC into a UPS if you have one. A power cut during a BIOS update can leave the board unable to start.

What you need

  • Your exact motherboard model. It is printed on the board and shown on the BIOS main screen. In Windows, press Windows + R, type msinfo32 and look at BaseBoard Product.
  • Your current BIOS version, shown in msinfo32 next to BIOS Version/Date.
  • A USB stick, formatted as FAT32, with nothing important on it.
  • 10–15 minutes without interruptions.

Step 1: Download the right BIOS file

  1. Search for your motherboard model and open the manufacturer's official website. Never download a BIOS from anywhere else.
  2. Go to Support, then BIOS.
  3. Check the version list and download the newest version, unless the notes say you need to install an older one first.

Model names matter. A board called B550 Tomahawk and one called B550 Tomahawk Max are different boards with different BIOS files. Flashing the wrong file is the most common way this job goes wrong, so compare the model name letter by letter.

Step 2: Prepare the USB stick

FAT32 is a simple, older storage format that every BIOS can read. To format the stick, open File Explorer, right-click the USB drive, choose Format, pick FAT32 and click Start. This erases the stick.

  1. Back up or delete everything on the USB stick.
  2. Copy the downloaded ZIP to the stick and extract it.
  3. Move the extracted files to the root of the stick, which means directly on the stick, not inside a folder. Then delete the ZIP and the empty folder. Only the BIOS files should be left.

What the stick should look like

  • Format as FAT32
  • Extract the ZIP
  • Move files to the root

02BIOS fileDirectly on the stick, not in a folderRoot
03ZIP and other filesDelete them so only the BIOS file is leftRemove

Step 3: Flash the BIOS

  1. Restart and keep pressing Delete until the BIOS opens.
  2. On MSI boards, open Advanced and click M-Flash, then confirm Yes. The PC restarts into the flash tool.
  3. Select the BIOS file from your USB stick (on my board it started with E7B) and confirm.
  4. Wait. It takes 5–10 minutes. Do not touch the PC, press any button or switch it off.

When it finishes, the PC restarts on its own. It may restart more than once, and the screen may stay black for a minute while it trains the memory. That is normal. Open the BIOS again and check the version and build date on the main screen. They should match the file you downloaded.

Other brands

  • ASUS: EZ Flash 3, under Tool in Advanced Mode.
  • Gigabyte: Q-Flash, press End at startup or find it in the BIOS.
  • ASRock: Instant Flash, under Tool.

Many boards also have a feature called BIOS Flashback, with a small button on the back panel. It can update the BIOS from a USB stick even without a processor installed. Check your manual for the exact file name and port it expects.

After the update

A BIOS update resets your settings to default. Go through these before you start Windows:

  • Turn TPM and Secure Boot back on if you use Windows 11. My TPM 2.0 guide and Secure Boot guide show where they are.
  • Enable XMP or EXPO again so your memory runs at its rated speed.
  • Check the boot order so the Windows drive starts first.

If you use BitLocker, Windows may ask for your recovery key once after a BIOS update. Keep the key from your Microsoft account ready before you start.

If something goes wrong

  • The file does not show up in the flash tool: the stick is probably not FAT32, or the files are inside a folder. Format it again and move the files to the root.
  • The tool says the file is not valid: you downloaded the BIOS for a different model. Check the exact name.
  • The PC does not start after the update: wait a few minutes first, then clear CMOS with my Clear CMOS guide. If your board has BIOS Flashback or a dual BIOS switch, those can recover it.

The short version

Only update when you have a reason. Download the file for your exact model from the official site, put only the BIOS files on a FAT32 stick, flash it from the BIOS and do not touch the PC until it restarts. Then turn your settings back on.
