When Windows 11 first came out, version 21H2, you could not drag a file onto an app's icon on the taskbar. If you drag files into editing apps, browsers or chat windows all day like I do, that was a real step backwards. I even went back to Windows 10 for a while because of it.

The good news is that Microsoft brought taskbar drag and drop back. When I made my video, the only way to get it was through the Windows Insider Program. Today it is part of the normal Windows 11 updates. Here is how to check whether you have it, how to get it and how to use it.

What "taskbar drag and drop" means

In Windows 10, you could drag a file from File Explorer, hold it over an app's icon on the taskbar, and that app would come to the front. Then you dropped the file into its window. For example, you could drag a photo onto a minimized browser and drop it into an email. The first Windows 11 release removed this, and you had to arrange windows side by side instead.

Step 1: Check your Windows version

  1. Press Windows + R, type winver and press Enter.
  2. A small window shows your Windows version.

Taskbar drag and drop returned in Windows 11 version 22H2. If you see 22H2 or any newer version, such as 23H2 or 24H2, you already have it. If you see 21H2, you need to update.

What winver tells you

Do you already have it?

Version 21H2Not yetThe first Windows 11 release. Update through Windows Update.Update needed
22H2 or newerYes, it worksDrag and drop to the taskbar is built in. Nothing to install.Ready

Step 2: Update Windows

  1. Open Settings and go to Windows Update.
  2. Click Check for updates.
  3. If a feature update to a newer Windows 11 version is offered, click Download and install.
  4. Restart when it asks.

Feature updates are large and can take a while, so plug in your laptop and do this when you do not need the PC for an hour.

What about the Insider Program?

When this feature was new, I joined the Windows Insider Program's Beta Channel to get it early, and that is what my video shows. Today you do not need to do that. The feature is in the regular releases. The Insider Program is still there if you like trying new features early, but Beta and especially Dev builds can have more bugs, so I would not use them on a PC you depend on for work.

How to use it

  1. Open File Explorer and start dragging a file.
  2. Hold the file over an app's icon on the taskbar, without letting go.
  3. After a moment, the app comes to the front.
  4. Move the file into the app's window and drop it.

How it works

Drag, hold, then drop in the window

01Start draggingPick up a file in File Explorer.Explorer
02Hold over the iconKeep the mouse button down on the taskbar icon.Taskbar
03Window comes forwardThe app opens in front of everything.About a second
04Drop insideRelease the file in the app's window.Done

If the app has several windows open, hovering shows the window previews. Hold the file over the preview you want, and that window opens.

If it still does not work

  • Run winver again and make sure the update finished. Some updates only complete after a second restart.
  • Hold the file over the icon for a second. A quick pass does not trigger it.
  • You cannot drop a file directly onto the icon itself. The icon only brings the window forward, and you drop inside the window.
  • If you use a taskbar customization app, try turning it off. Some of them change how the taskbar handles dragging.

If you are stuck on an older version and cannot update yet, I have two other guides: two ways to drag and drop files without the taskbar, and a free tool that restores it on older Windows 11.

The short version

Check your version with winver. If it says 22H2 or newer, taskbar drag and drop already works. If it says 21H2, update Windows through Settings. Then drag a file, hold it over the app's taskbar icon and drop it into the window.
